  4. Country Description:  Malaysia is a federal parliamentary democracy with a
  5. constitutional monarch.  Tourist facilities and services are available in
  6. major areas of interest.
  7.  
  8. Entry Requirements:  A passport is required.  Visas are not required for
  9. stays of up to three months.  Yellow fever and cholera immunizations are
  10. necessary if arriving from infected areas.  For further information the

  12. Washington, D.C. 20008; telephone (202) 328-2700.

  14. Medical Facilities:  Medical facilities and services are adequate in the
  15. larger cities.  Doctors and hospitals often expect immediate cash payment
  16. for health services.  U.S. medical insurance is not always valid outside the
  17. United States.  Supplemental medical insurance with specific overseas
  18. coverage has proven useful.  The international traveler's hotline of the
  19. Centers for Disease Control at (404) 332-4559 has additional useful health
  20. information.

  22. Information on Crime:  Major crimes against tourists are uncommon.  Malaysia
  23. has one of the highest rates of credit card fraud in the world.  Petty
  24. crimes such as pickpocketing and purse-snatching are common in tourist
  25. areas.  The loss or theft abroad of a U.S. passport should be reported
  26. immediately to local police and to the U.S. Embassy.  Useful information on
  27. guarding valuables and protecting personal security while traveling abroad
  28. is provided in the Department of State pamphlet, "A Safe Trip Abroad."  It
  29. is available from the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing
  30. Office, Washington, D.C. 20402.

  32. Drug Penalties:  U.S citizens are subject to the laws and legal practices of
  33. the country in which they are traveling.  Malaysia strictly enforces its
  34. drug laws.  Malaysian legislation provides for a mandatory death penalty for
  35. convicted drug traffickers.  Individuals arrested in possession of fifteen
  36. grams (1/2 ounce) of heroin or two hundred grams (7 ounces) of marijuana are
  37. presumed by law to be trafficking in drugs.

  39. Registration:  Americans who register at the U.S. Embassy can obtain updated
  40. information on travel and security within the country.
